MAGA BO: Confusion Of Tongues EP #1 out next week on 12” vinyl!

This release is a futuristic collaboration involving Morocco’s K-Libre and Bigg — imagine a grimey dubstep banger with vocals from some of north Africa’s most respect rappers and arabesque sampled snippets and you’ll begin to get an idea. The borders are melting.

Dr Das — the sonic & social innovator behind Asian Dub Foundation — flips the Maga original into a dense ragga-dub dancefloor experience. DJ /rupture’s live quartet Nettle did a rare remix for this, using string arrangements and break freakery.

RUPTURE+ANDY MOOR
For the past 2 years, turntablist DJ /rupture and guitarist Andy Moor have been playing completely improved duo sets, with a collaborative album slated for 2007 release.

Their dynamic interactions range from moments of delicate avant-garde soundwork to futuristic beats intersected by angular guitar.

ANDY MOOR, from England, is a member of legendary band The Ex (Touch & Go). From their anarcho-punk birth in 1979 (!) they’ve tirelessly explored a melting-pot of styles: noise, rock, jazz, improv, and African and European folk. He’s also a founding member of the bands Dog Faced Hermans and Kletka Red. Moor has played electric guitar over the last 15 years with improvisers such as Kaffe Matthews, Han Bennink, John Butcher, Tony Buck, Yannis Kryiakides, and many others. His discordant, highly rhythmic baritone guitar playing is elemental and muscular, electrifying and unique.

The last time RUPTURE played upstairs at Tonic he was DJing in a band with Norah Jones. Since then he’s gone expat, released records on Tigerbeat6 and Soul Jazz, toured the world a few times, and performed alongside the 80-member Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. When playing with Andy, Rupture moves between polyrhythmic beat-science and unorthodox textural DJing that pushes the use of turntable as instrument. Expect flipped hiphop battle techniques and his usual disregard for convention.

Filastine’s BURN IT album has been licensed to Romz Records in Japan and is now available there in a special edition with 3 bonus remixes by DJ /rupture, DJ Shiro, and Baku.

Maga Bo’s mix CD and 12″ is in production — look for it later this year. the 12″ features original Maga Bo productions plus bumping remixes by Dr. Das of Asian Dub Foundation and Nettle.

first off:

Timeblind GHOSTIFICATION EP is alive and kicking. As Warpmart explained: “Absolutely excellent single from Timeblind, who has picked up the dubstep virus here and gone all haunted on us.” We’re received tons of positive feedback on this one — it’s a deeep record.

iTunes now rocks the mp3s, but bass devotees will need the clear vinyl version, which is sure to sell-out soon…

A CONFUSION OF TONGUES

Maga Bo recently joined the Soot camp, and his mixtape CD, A Confusion of Tongues, will be released this fall. Along with the CD, there will be a coupla 12″s with original Maga Bo productions featuring members of Senegal’s top rap crew, Pee Froiss, and remixes by Asian Dub Foundation’s Dr Das, Ghislain Poirier, and Nettle.

Newcomers to Maga Bo’s sound should check out his free Blentwell mix. Bo is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is currently in Zanzibar recording with MCs and taarab ensembles. He keeps it really real, in case you were wondering.

DJ /rupture teamed up with Maga Bo to curate a Third World Beats CD “A La Carte” selection for Barcelona’s SONAR festival. You can stream the audio here. They squeezed in 17 songs, most or all of them aren’t distributed internationally and are otherwise hard to get ahold of. Kwaito, kuduro, African rap, raï, proto-reggaeton, proibidao funk carioca, Berber pop, a lo-fi recording of Cheb Mami riding a classic reggae riddim, and more.

MISTER RUPTURE

will be performing at Holland’s (big) Lowlands festival this Friday, August 18. On the 19^th he and Andy Moor (The Ex) will do a low-key improv duo performance at OT301. the evening is free, starts at 9pm. Check Rupture’s blog for updates and mp3s and decentertainment. Mister /Rupture keeps busy finishing production on the Nettle album. More as it comes.
